Why buy an HSM Shredder?

by Hugh Martin on 2007-12-21 08:10:52 - Email This

Because quality counts; that's why.

In my years selling office supplies and equipment, there is a hard fact I want to share with you. I have had no other single item returned defective more often than shredders. We used to sell only GBC and Fellowes shredders, but most of them are made in China and just not up to fulfilling the promises they make on paper in their specifications.

Many of our school customers would spend $500 or more on what they thought was a very high-end, high-capacity shredder, only to have it quit inside of 3 months. Granted both companies, GBC especially, were quite good about standing up for their products and sending replacements, but wouldn't you rather have a shredder that didn't quit at all? Down-time without a shredder is a hassle and a potential security risk if sensitive documents do not get destroyed in a timely manner.

Since that time, Indoff has now turned to a company we feel makes the best engineered shredders on the market: HSM Shredders. All of their shredders are designed and engineered in Germany. (Think BMW, Mercedes, Porsche) Most of them are also made in Germany with a few models manufactured in California.

HSM Shredders may appear to cost a bit more up front than a "competitive" shredder, but their really is no comparison in quality. I am so much more comfortable now selling these shredders to my local customers. They know me and trust me and when I tell them that our Indoff shredders are just better, they always choose quality over the cheapest available option.

Oregon requiring document destruction

by Hugh Martin on 2007-12-05 09:41:57 - Email This

A key piece of Oregon's identity theft law takes effect Jan. 1, 2008. By that date, Oregon businesses, organizations, and government agencies will need to have a plan in place to protect the sensitive data they collect, keep and share.

Logo

The law requires you to develop, implement, and maintain reasonable safeguards. This includes a number of measures such as designating one or more of your employees to coordinate a security program; assessing your information processing, transmission, and storage risks; and detecting, preventing, and responding to computerized intrusions. It also includes the proper disposal of information through shredding, or burning, or rendering it unreadable in electronic form through encryption or similar procedure. Click here for more information.

To help you become compliant, we have tools available on this site to help you assess your needs based on paper volume, number of employees etc. Please check out the various forms and charts in the ABOUT section of our Shredder catalog.

Shredding Requirements for Consumer Credit Reports

by Hugh Martin on 2007-12-02 19:04:11 - Email This

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act of 2003 (FACTA) required businesses and individuals to take appropriate measures to dispose of sensitive information derived from consumer reports.

The Rule applies to people and both large and small organizations that use consumer reports, including: consumer reporting companies; lenders; insurers; employers; landlords; government agencies; mortgage brokers, car dealers; attorneys; private investigators; debt collectors; individuals who pull consumer reports on prospective home employees, such as nannies or contractors; and entities that maintain information in consumer reports as part of their role as a service provider to other organizations covered by the Rule.

Not only from a compliance standpoint does it make good sense to destroy consumer report information, but also as a customer service issue.  Giving out your social security number itself can make a person feel a bit uneasy these days.  Imagine the impact it would give your potential customer if when done with their information you walk right over to a large deparmental shredder and destroy their information in front of them.  You don't have to tell them that you care about protecting their identity and account information, you just SHOWED THEM YOU CARE.  That speaks volumes.

Calculating shredder savings over shredding services

by Hugh Martin on 2007-11-12 14:25:24 - Email This

You may be wondering if the monthly bills you are paying to your shredding service really are the most cost effective way to deal with your document destruction needs.  It isn't and neither are shredding services more secure.

But let's stick to cost factors alone for the moment.  If you'd like to figure it out in black and white and know for sure, I can help.

There are two steps to this.

  1. Fill out this form for Calculating your shredding services expenses.
  2. Fill out this form to calculate shredder costs to outfit your business with your own shredders.

For #2, you need to select an appropriate shredder(s) as well.  We have many tools available in our ABOUT section to help you with this, or you may use the CONTACT US link to request assistance.

I hope this proves helpful to you.  I think you'll find it eye-opening!

Control who can shred sensitive documents

by Hugh Martin on 2007-11-07 08:41:52 - Email This

Internal Personnel Should Not be Responsible To Destroy Certain Information.

Common sense dictates that payroll information and materials that involve labor relations or legal affairs, should not be entrusted to lower level employees for destruction. But, beyond that, competition sensitive information is best protected from them as well. It has been established, time and again, that employees are the most likely to realize the value of certain information to competitors. And, lower wage employees often have the economic incentive to capitalize on their access to it. The only acceptable alternatives are to have the materials destroyed under the supervision of upper management or by a carefully selected, high security service.
